Lifetime Achievement-Regional Track
Professor Nagi S. El Saghir graduated from Free University of Brussels, trained in New York, practiced in New York, Saudi Arabia and Michigan before joining the American University of Beirut (AUB) in 1993. He is the Founding President of the Lebanese Society of Medical Oncology (LSMO), Lebanese Breast Cancer Foundation, Custodian of Breast Cancer Needy Patients Fund and Huda Onsi Breast Cancer Fund at AUBMC.
Prof. El-Saghir previously served as Chair of American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) International Affairs Committee, Past Co-Chair Advisory Group of ASCO Clinical Practice Guidelines, European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) Scientific Committee. He also served on numerous Committees at the Ministry of Health, WHO, UICC, ASCO, ESMO, ESO, Arab Medical Association Against Cancer (AMAAC) Founding Executive Board, ESO, ABC Global Alliance, Core Faculty ESMO and ESO. He served on the panel and as a Co-Author of Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) Guidelines for Low- Middle- Income Countries and ESO/ESMO Advanced Breast Cancer (ABC) International Consensus Guidelines for management of patients with breast cancer.
He has over 140 publications and 8000 citations, hundreds of international abstracts and lectures, over 1000 media appearances, and is the author of the ABCs of Breast Cancer book in Arabic. His innovative research is focused on breast cancer, treatment, young women, BRCA mutations in Lebanon and Arab countries, early detection, multidisciplinary tumor boards, guidelines, new drugs and international clinical trials.
In recognition of his cancer research, teaching, professional and community services, contributions to downstaging of breast cancer, improvement of treatment and survival 80%-90% in early breast cancer, he received Lebanon’s Presidential Cedar Medal of Honor-ranks Officer and Commander, Excellence in Research Award-CNRS, League of Women’s Rights, Lebanese Order of Physicians, LSMO, AMAAC, Cairo University, Fellowship of ASCO Award (FASCO), Arab Culture Icon Award from Antelias Cultural Movement, and Purdue University/IBCN Susan Bulkeley Butler Leadership Excellence Award. In 2018, AUBMC named the “Professor Nagi El Saghir Conference Room” in his honor. He currently serves as custodian of Breast Cancer Needy Patients Fund and Huda Onsi Breast Cancer Fund at AUBMC
