Clinical Program Excellence

The King Hussein Award’s Clinical Program Excellence category recognizes clinical programs that are related to cancer care and are affiliated with or hosted in a medical school or an accredited hospital/cancer center in the Arab world. This Award category will rotate annually between the following three designations: Institutional Excellence in 2021, Clinical Program Excellence in 2022 and Academic Program Excellence in 2023.

How to Apply

To apply for the Clinical Program Excellence in Research Award, applications must include the following components:

  • Main information about the applying program
  • Accreditations (if applicable, to the program itself, if not then accreditations of the host institution)
  • Quality KPIs: process and outcome indicators
  • Overview of main research projects, results and accomplishments
  • List of active oncology research projects and cancer related publications generated in the last 5 years
  • List of cancer research projects funded by the institution and by external entities in the last 5 years

Conditions for Applying

Eligible submissions to the Clinical Program Excellence in Research Award shall meet the following conditions:

  • The clinical program relates to cancer care and is affiliated with or hosted in a medical school or accredited hospital/cancer center in the Arab world.
  • The program has been in service for a minimum of five years.
  • The program demonstrates a comprehensive clinical continuum of care (from prevention/early detection up to palliative care), or be comprehensive in its context of care.(for example if the program is for prevention only)
  • The program demonstrates commitment to national/international ethical standards and regulations.
  • The program demonstrates commitment to research, teaching, and/or training of future Health Care Professionals in the field.
  • The program maintains a system to measure and monitor the quality of care including KPIs and benchmarking.
  • Community outreach/engagement and impact.
  • The program should provide care to an acceptable number of new cancer patients per year based on the incidence of cancer in specific disease categories.
  • The program should have recognized organizational structure and well-staffed.

Evaluation Criteria

Awardees will be selected based upon evaluation of the following criteria:

  • Staff credentials and multidisciplinary
  • Presence of cancer committee in the affiliated hospital
  • Performance and work success (evidence-based practice)
  • Written policies and procedures documents
  • Use of standard clinical practice guidelines
  •  Overall impact and volume of work
  • Provision of cancer risk assessment/predisposition and genetic counseling (if applicable)
  • Reporting of clinical outcome with benchmarking to international data
  • Creativity and innovation 
  • Provision of cancer screening if applicable
  • Psychosocial distress screening
  • Multidisciplinary team participation in active clinical trials, and cumulative clinical trials
  • Research funding and output
  • Data transparency 
  • Collaboration with other programs
  • Inclusion of vulnerable individuals and minorities
